"The Washington Capitals have signed center Anton Gustafsson, their first-round choice, 21st overall, in the 2008 Entry Draft, to a three-year entry-level contract, vice president and general manager George McPhee announced today. In keeping with club policy, financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.
Gustafsson, 19, is a 6’2”, 194-pound native of Karlskoga, Sweden, who spent most of this season with Bofors IK of Sweden’s HockeyAllsvenskan league, recording 10 points (six goals, four assists) in 25 games. He also played for his junior team, Frolunda, and recorded seven points (three goals, four assists) in five playoff games."
Per Capitals press release.
Here's his Hockey's Future prospect profile, and here's a few words that stick out.
"Defensively, Gustafsson takes a lot responsibility and is a leader that takes no unnecessary risks. Instead, he makes smart and simple decisions. Overall, perhaps the most all-round Swedish player that is/was eligible for the 2008 NHL Entry Draft."
Smart and simple. Just what the doctor ordered for a Caps team that sometimes gets too complicated in the offensive zone.
Sounds like the deal is three years and would allow Anton to play for his Swedish team, Frolunda, should he not make the squad this summer.
Anton is the son of Bengt Gustafsson, a former Capital who is fifth all-time on the Caps for points.
