StaalvsCrosby

Our friends at The Pensblog will have a field day with this...we think.

Let's face it. The Capitals vs. Penguins series was the WWE equivalent of Mick Foley (Mankind, Dude Love, Cactus Jack) vs. The Rock. Two superstars at their prime, meeting in the first of numerous epic battles that would captivate the millions and millions of The Rock's/Mankind's fans!

Sorry, went a bit over board with the WWE talk, but anyway, if you know anything about professional wrestling and those two superstars, then you know exactly what I'm talking about. Matches that were able to bring even fans who pooh-pooh'ed the "sport" to watch an episode of Monday Night RAW.

But back to reality/the NHL playoffs. It's Game Four, and the Canes are down 3-0. Pittsburgh has been in total control of this series, and it's pretty clear that beside the Red Wings the best team behind Pittsburgh was Washington. Carolina is in the position of "lucky to be this far" or to use a TV show title to describe their playoffs, how about "I Shouldn't Be Alive."

Eric Staal vs. Sidney Crosby? So is this really the right time to dream up another storyline?

Let's not forget that Sidney Crosby has a whopping 12-point lead on Staal, and "Cam Ward to the rescue!" was as gone as Ward in Game Three. The "Staal vs. Staal" angle was pretty weak as well, and the one entertaining storyline between Brooks Orpik and Eric Cole, one that starts Internet flame wars with the ease of a California wildfire, isn't "high-profile" enough for the mainstream audience.

Even if the powers that be wanted to have a storyline for this stinker of a series, why didn't the NHL go with the "impossible comeback" angle? It would fit the billing considering the improbable odds and ways that Carolina even got this far.

Might as well start advertising Pens vs. Red Wings II: Redemption if this is the best they can think of.
