Puckheads rejoice -- we can officially have a tangible day to look forward to as the start of hockey season, and for me, it means updating the countdown clock. At 3 p.m. today, the NHL will release the 2009-2010 schedule.

We're a little late to the party, but the pre-season schedule has been released.

TBA Sabres at Buffalo TBA
Sept. 19 Blackhawks at Chicago 8:30
Sept. 21 Sabres at Verizon Center 7
Sept. 23 Blackhawks at Verizon Center 7
Sept 24 Rangers at New York 7
Sept. 27 Rangers at Verizon Center Noon

Two dates with the Rangers, Sabres and B-hawks, that's fine by me. It will be interesting to see the post-Tallon Blackhawks debut and the Caps reunion with Donald Brashear comes a little earlier than expected.

We can also start open debate about whether or not the Caps have started a rivalry with the Rangers -- I argue no for two reasons; the Rangers gutted their recent playoff roster and it simply wasn't as brutal a series as the Flyers or Pens series were.

Still, it should be fun to see the new Rangers (kind of like new Coke) led by Marian Gaborik and the early result of the Rangers free agent shopping spree.

We'll be at the Caps' development camp scrimmage today, blogging of course, and will post the new NHL schedule when it is made public although Japers' and a few others have dug up that the Caps will face the Red Wings on Oct. 10.

It's an exciting day if you're one for teasing yourself with a schedule and countdown clocks, but we'll be sure to feed your hockey hunger with a breakdown of the schedule and what could potentially be the most exciting games of the year.

Yeah, we're starved for hockey too.
