Pre-Cap: Caps vs. Habs

A few weeks ago, some Capitals players commented that the December snowstorm in Washington reminded them of their frigid homes. Now, after close to 35 inches of this crap, the team is fleeing D.C. in the face of another monster weather system for a pair of back-to-back games in the host country of the 2010 Winter Olympics.

Packed along with the hopes and dreams of the Capitals Olympians is a 14-game win streak that, if correctly defended this week, could reach a league record-tying 17 games one day after the Olympic flame is lit.

Problem is, it's wabbit win-streak hunting season. Los Angeles had its franchise-record streak snapped at nine by the Anaheim Ducks Monday. Before that, the Ottawa Senators, the Caps' Thursday night opponent, watched their franchise-high streak of 11 end in a 5-0 loss to Toronto.

Washington Capitals
41-12-6 - 88 points
First in the Eastern Conference
First in the Southeast Division

Montreal Canadiens
28-26-6 - 62 points
Sixth in the Eastern Conference
Third in Northeast Division

So the Caps are 100% in the playoffs.
Pretty self-explanatory, but shed a tear for the first team likely eliminated from the postseason, the Edmonton Oilers.

Well, that was awkward...
A look at the Habs record suggests things are going along rather well in Montreal. Who can complain about sitting in a playoff spot before the Olympic break? So it might surprise you that Canadiens' General Manager Bob Gainey has decided to step down from his position, saying he was not prepared to commit to the team in future seasons. Here's the press conference. Pierre Gauthier will take over the GM job for the Habs.

Not having to face their top scorer is nice...
The Canadiens will be without the services the team's leading goal scorer, Mike Cammalleri (26 goals, 48 points) tonight. Cammalleri was injured during a Jan. 30 bout with the Ottawa Senators after a hit by Russian defender Anton Volchenkov.

Because I know you're dying to fish with Scott Gomez
Here's a fun video from a few seasons back when Gomez, now a Canadien, had just signed with the New York Rangers. Gomez is the Canadien's third-leading scorer with eight goals, 31 assists and 39 points.

Lets Go Caps!
